Dunedin Symphony Orchestra presents GUITAR EXTRAVAGANZA

Dunedin Symphony Orchestra presents GUITAR EXTRAVAGANZA

Kenneth Young Conductor
Vladimir Gorbach, Owen Moriarty, Jane Curry, John Couch Guitars

Beethoven: Egmont Overture
Jack Speirs: Night Music
Rodrigo: Concierto Andaluz
Fauré: Pelléas et Mélisande Suite
Mozart: Symphony No. 35, Haffner

At the heart of this programme are three evocative works spanning exactly 100 years. Fauré's Pelléas et Mélisande Suite (1892) depicting the tragic story of Princess Mélisande, and regarded as Fauré's orchestral masterpiece; Jack Speirs' Night Music, written in 1992; and Rodrigo's Concierto Andaluz (1967), a fascinating blend of baroque-influenced and impressionistic Spanish music. Making their début performance with the DSO as soloists for Rodrigo's Concierto is the remarkable NZ Guitar Quartet.

Mozart's Haffner symphony is amongst his last symphonies which are considered amongst the pinnacle of his compositions.

Conducting this concert is Wellington-based Kenneth Young, who conducts leading New Zealand and Australian orchestras.
