KIWIFRUITS

KIWIFRUITS

In this hilarious free-wheeling Kiwi version of the Cinderella story, Fay Gay tells fellow performer Tatania the story of how the Castle Road Tavern was saved from ruin by being transformed from a traditional working men’s pub into a venue for spectacular drag shows. Featuring a wicked lawyer, glamorous gowns, delicious dancing and a fairy godmother unlike any you’ve ever seen before. Note: Contains adult themes, mild swearing, outrageous drag queens and platform shoes. Not suitable for children. The play’s first half centres largely on Ben, who leaves Wellington to work for a while in London. When he returns, he’s devastated to find his beloved family tavern has unexpectedly changed hands. Ben is also kept busy by being at the centre of an awkward love triangle, and then hatches a scheme to save the day and get his tavern back. The play is narrated by Fay Gay and Tatania, who keep it moving at breakneck speed by throwing themselves into song and dance routines with some excellent lip-synching thrown in for good effect. Fans of 1970s music will be right at home with lavish renditions of songs including The Age of Aquarius, from the musical Hair, and It’s Raining Men. Kiwifruits has to be one of the funniest, if not the funniest, plays to grace the community theatre’s stage in the past few years. It ends with an eye-watering drag review that will keep audience members smiling for days.
