Nelson Symphony Orchestra present Vienna

Of all the European cities prominent in the world of classical music in the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries, Vienna stands out for its depth of composerly talent.
"Vienna", the forthcoming concert by the Nelson Symphony Orchestra on 30 June in the Auditorium of the refurbished Nelson Centre of the Music Arts will feature five works by Vienna's greatest composers. These range from the superbly refined classicism of Haydn and Mozart to the lush romanticism of Mahler and Brahms.
The concert commences with the well-known "Rosamunde" overture by Schubert followed by the scintillating violin concerto in D major by Mozart performed by the orchestra's concert master John Thomson.
Before the first half concludes, the orchestra will perform Mahler's celebrated "Adagietto" from his monumental 5th symphony. This beautiful piece for strings and harp was the haunting film music for "Death in Venice" in the early 1970's.
After the interval, the Nelson Symphony Orchestra will perform Brahms's well-known "Academic Festival Overture". Brahms made use of several student drinking songs including "Gaudeamus Igitur" in this overture.
The concert concludes with the "Drum Roll" Symphony by Haydn, number 103 of his 104 symphonies.
